A 56-year-old man who drowned Saturday in Tempe Town Lake was a Tempe city employee, officials said.

Joseph O’Connor fell into the lake from a boat and was discovered by the Tempe Fire Department’s dive team at about 1:30 p.m., Tempe police spokesman Mike Pooley said.

Pooley said police don’t suspect foul play and that the investigation is still on-going.

About 8:30 a.m., fire crews responded to a call for a person in distress on the south side of the lake near Mill Avenue and were told that a man had fallen off a boat into the water, according to the Tempe Fire Department.

The man resurfaced and tried to get back in the boat, but went underwater, fire officials said.

Several people were in the area and tried to rescue the man but could not find him after he went under, officials said. By the time paramedics got on scene, the man had not resurfaced for some time, fire officials said.

Diving teams were sent in about 9:30 a.m.
